Luke 1:42 NLT

Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed.”

Elizabeth tells Mary, “God has blessed you above ALL women.”  Seriously?!?  Pregnant.  Out of wedlock.  Conceived by the Holy Spirit.  That is not how we script our lives.  That’s not how “blessed” looks in our plan.

We all want to be blessed and we interpret what that looks like differently.  Some think of blessing as health, wealth and happiness.  That’s a good interpretation but it’s more than that.  For some people blessing is more like food, shelter and safety.  Ultimately, at the end of the day, blessing is not a material thing.  Blessing is a spiritual thing.  Blessing is being in the center of God’s good, pleasing and perfect will.  It’s that eternal perspective that I admire most about Mary.

Here’s the deal, God doesn’t promise us happily ever after.  He promises us much more than that…happily forever after.

God, thank you for the blessing of your son.  Thank you for Jesus who was born to die.  Help me to always see the blessings in my life with an eternal perspective.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
