SOAP – A Broken Spirit

Psalm 51:16-17 New Living Translation (NLT)

16 You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one.
You do not want a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.
You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

God doesn’t want our stuff.  He doesn’t want for us to just follow the rules and check the boxes that we’ve done the “right” things, acted like a good Christian, served at the church, sang the songs, volunteered our time, gave in the offering.  He doesn’t look for the things we do, and judge accordingly.

So, what does He want then?  V17 says, “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.  You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”  We can bring all the “sacrifices”, do all the things, but if we’re still hanging onto our pride, refusing to allow our hearts to break and be truly repentant, then we’re just giving lip service.  Humility and honesty are the things God is looking for.  It starts with humbling ourselves before Him, and being honest with God about the things He reveals to us about our condition, and our need for Him.  The other stuff, the serving, the singing, the worship, the giving… these then begin to flow out of our new hearts… a willingness to obey… and we experience the joy of His salvation!
