SOAP with Doug – Oh, that pesky unforgiveness!

Ephesians 4:32 New Living Translation (NLT)

32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

We have received God’s forgiveness, through Christ’s sacrifice.  We are forgiven, washed clean, made new.  Yet, oftentimes we don’t walk in that forgiveness.  Why do we sometimes have trouble living like we’re a new creation, a child of God?  I think one reason could be that we’re harboring unforgiveness in our hearts.

Matthew 6:14-15 New Living Translation (NLT)

14 “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

When we read the Parable of the Unforgiving Debtor in Matthew 18:21-35, we see this concept of forgiveness perfectly illustrated. It’s a matter of the heart.  When we refuse to forgive others, and hold onto resentment, bitterness, anger, and carry around a sense of entitlement, we are hindering the healing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  We won’t see much fruit if we’re full of weeds.

Let’s pray and ask God to reveal any unforgiveness in our hearts, and to grant us the humility to truly forgive.
